%20Waste processing and recycling

Project name:
Waste processing and recycling

Location:
North Sulawesi, Indonesia

The project

Masarang has purchased 60 hectares land which is ideal for establishing a waste processing project. Our intention is to do composting, convert methane gas to electricity, recycling, produce energy from biomass (organic waste) and create jobs through clean and safe waste processing. The waste will be processed so that it does not pollute the groundwater. Masarang already has two waste disposal vehicles for this project.

Masarang already contributes to a cleaner and healthier environment in a number of ways: records are kept of how clean the public areas, gardens and gutters in villages in North Sulawesi are. The media publishes a monthly overview of the cleanest and the dirtiest village. The villages actively work to avoid getting a low rating and so keep their surroundings cleaner. Masarang also organizes clean-ups of illegal waste dumps along roads and trees are planted to discourage waste dumping.

Significance and aims of the project

  • To make waste processing less damaging to people and the environment
  • To improve waste collection services, promote waste recycling and create jobs.
  • The compost produced is intended for use by local farmers instead of artificial fertilizers, which is in general extremely damaging to the environment.
  • To provide information on how to deal with toxic wastes and to combat water pollution.

Results

  • Information campaigns have reached thousands of people, who now keep their surroundings cleaner and dispose of less waste in a non-sustainable or hazardous way. For example, Masarang discourages the practice of burying chemical wastes and batteries.
  • Drainage systems and wells have also been cleaned out, 200 waste containers have been relocated, folders and information have been provided and 60 hectares of land has been purchased and already reforested so that it can be used for sustainable waste processing.

Plans and needs

  • We have plans to establish a composting facility, costing approximately 70,000 euros, including campaigns to motivate people and the organization of a pick-up service.
  • We would like to secure another three water sources. These will need to be purchased and trees planted around them. A sum of about 50,000 euros is needed for this.
