Project name: Research and Advice on reforestation		Location: Throughout Indonesia

Masarang regularly visits other areas to offer advice to local people and agencies. Examples are the Jakarta water-collection area, the Cirata reforestation and Tobelo in the North Molukken, as well as to the Dayak people in West Kalimantan.

The project

In addition to working on its own reforestation projects, Masarang works with other organisations and landholders to offer support for environmentally friendly and productive reforestation. Masarang carries out research for organizations that work for a better environment on how and where reforestation can best be implemented. Masarang has acquired significant expertise on reforestation and determines which areas are suitable for various types of reforestation on the basis of soil composition, rainfall, elevation and contribution to the economy, among others. We consider how reforestation can take place as efficiently as possible, as well as which trees are suitable and in what order they should be planted. Finally, Masarang also helps with the practical execution and monitoring of the project.

Significance and aims of the project

Reforestation contributes to fighting poverty, job creation, saving endangered animals and plants, combating global climate change, the availability of clean water, counteracting erosion, and favorable moisture and temperature regulation. Results

By means of various nurseries, 120,000 sugar palms have been planted in Yogjakarta (Central Java), 50,000 in Sukabumi, 30,000 in the vicinity of the Cirata reservoir (West Java) and 50,000 in Malang (East Java)

100,000 sugar palms have been planted in West Kalimantan, 200,000 in East Kalimantan and 10,000 in Central Kalimantan

80,000 trees have been planted in North Sulawesi in a variety of locations.

Future plans and needs

Masarang is planning to give advice and carry out project management for the cultivation of 30,000 hectares of mixed sugar palm forest in East Kalimantan as part of a reforestation project to provide a buffer zone for the release area of the Meratus orangutan.

As a certified supplier of selected sugar palms, we want to produce more of these seedlings which can be sent to reforestation projects just after being germinated. To this end we are currently constructing a new large nursery in Tomohon with special packaging and shipping capacities.
