Since April 2011 Marie-José is active as volunteer for the foundation Masarang International. Together with Steven Smit she works for the foundation, in order to raise awareness and money for the projects of Masarang. Marie-José has a background in education. She has been a teacher at a primary school for a couple of years and now works as teammanager educational activities for the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. As traveler she encountered the landscape of palm oil plantations in Borneo. It shocked her and motivated her to do something about it. That's when she got in touch with the projects of Willie Smits and Masarang in Sulawesi, Indonesia. She believes in the ideas and solutions that Willie Smits offers with Masarang and supports this with great enthusiasm.
